Celebrating history makers – 100 years on – on the eve of the new domestic football season!
Before Manchester City or United. Before Arsenal or Liverpool. Huddersfield Town were the first team in English football to win 3 top flight titles, back to back to back!
In 1924, 25 and 26 they were the best team in England, led initially by innovative manager Herbert Chapman before he joined Arsenal. They were the trailblazers – The Thrice Champions!
It was a tremendous honour to host the centenary Dinner at Huddersfield Town Football Club commemorating that achievement and looking ahead to the new season. We were joined by Clem Stephenson, Jimmy Islip and Kay Dully – whose relatives were members of that group – as they shared stories and memories of a team now etched in football history.
New Head Coach, Martin Drury, captain Ryan Ledson and Sporting Director Chris Markham spoke of their ambition for the season ahead and the inspiration the team of the 1920s still provides for everyone at the club today.
Players and managers who’ve represented the club during the last 50 years were also present and there was much laughter as they recalled tales of their time with Huddersfield.
Chief Operating Officer, David Threlfall-Sykes pulled all the generations together with an address which highlighted the common bond shared and the tremendous pride felt, following in the footsteps of a group which both put Huddersfield on the map and set the standard in English football for a generation, which their rivals had to chase.
There is a well known phrase, “you can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve been.” On this night, Huddersfield Town reminded everyone present where this club has been. Their planned destination…a promotion winning campaign in the season ahead.
